![]() New Works presents inspiring, culturally diverse, and accessible dance performances in and around Vancouver, B.C. Our presentation series is comprised of five distinct performance series – All Over the Map, Dance Allsorts, Pop Up Dances, New Works at Night, and our public school outreach initiative Share Dance.
Artists may submit proposals at any time, keeping in mind that our season is normally booked by the previous spring. Proposals should include a project description and video documentation, as well as a list of upcoming performances. All Over the Map is New Works’ long-standing, popular summer series, promoting dance and music from around the globe. Performances are hosted over three Sundays in the month of August, at 1pm and 3pm, on the outdoor stage on Granville Island. These lively, one-hour performances take place at Ron Basford Park and are targeted to families of all ages, community members, and visitors to the island. Dance Allsorts has been offering audiences a monthly dance experience from September to June since 1997. Each show is professional, inclusive, innovative, and appropriate for an all-ages audience. The Dance Allsorts series also includes a one-hour community workshop, designed for all ages and all abilities. These workshops take place directly after each show, and are taught by that day’s featured artist. Workshops are offered for free, and are always filled to capacity. Pop Up Dances take place during the Winterruption Festival on Granville Island in February of each year, and has been presented since 2007. These pieces are held on Granville Island in non-traditional spaces, where dancers present 5 – 10 minute, site-specific performances. New Works partners with studios and businesses on the island to present these dance installations in various storefronts, galleries, and studio windows. Admission is free for the public to enjoy the performing arts in a fun and spontaneous way. Share Dance is an initiative which brings professional dance artists to inner city elementary schools in Vancouver, for in-school and after-school workshops. New Works runs these workshops at no cost to the schools or after-school care programs, which typically have little or no budget for artistic programming. Share Dance provides an inclusive space for children to be introduced to new forms of expression, and to experience the physical and emotional release of dance. New Works at Night was launched in 2014, and is an expansion of the Dance Allsorts program. It offers mixed programs of longer and full-length works. These evening shows begin with New Works’ Season Launch, and then occur 2 – 3 times throughout each season. They are opportunities for artists to present work that explores deeper themes and dance experiences, and are important creative works to support and disseminate. The Performance Works outdoor stage is a professionally staffed venue with a 12’ by 24’ stage (additional staging can be added to accommodate musicians). |
