At Dancemakers our curatorial lens focuses on contemporary aesthetics, cross-disciplinary dialogues and collaborative engagements. By contemporary, we mean practices, processes and aesthetics that are at the vanguard of current thinking. By cross-disciplinary, we mean the fruitful collision of dance with other traditions. And by collaborative, we mean ways of working that invite generous and open participation in the creative process.
Our main vehicle for this work is Dancemakers Presents (DMP), a biennial festival (every other January) which takes place in our home venue the Centre for Creation where audiences can encounter artists from abroad, across Canada and Toronto. The12 day Festival includes performances, workshops for the professional dance and performance community, and a series of three ancillary audience engagement events called Talking/Dancing.
Dancemakers Presents (DMP) embraces artists we know and those new to our city who work on the boundaries of traditional forms to bring us powerful ideas that deepen our experiences in unexpected ways. They are artists who have had limited exposure in the Toronto market or are beginning to develop close relationships with Toronto audiences.
Our current curatorial focus explores the duet as a powerful, compelling launch site for discussion of human relationships. TWOBYTHREE - a festival of duets features three companies, each presented for three performances.
Artists that have performed as part of the Dancemakers Presents include: Antonija Livingstone, Martin Bélanger, Sasha Ivanachko, Catherine Tardiff, Susanna Hood, Ame Henderson / Matija Ferlin, Melanie Démers / Laila Diallo, Jonathan Burrows / Matteo Fargion.
The Centre for Creation is a fully equipped state-of-the-art 98-seat black box venue with a performance space 54’ x 36’ (with stage draperies in place 46’ x 36’).
