DanceWorks is Toronto's longest running independent dance series, and a leader in drawing audiences to diverse contemporary forms on innovative, provocative programs. The series supports creation, production and touring of groundbreaking choreography by professional dance artists. Work is selected by the Curator based on artistic vision and excellence; compatibility with other work on the season and marketability to Toronto's varied and discerning audience. The series encourages dance literacy through artist talk-backs after selected performances, Carol's Dance Notes distributed to the audience, Student Matinees and other educational initiatives. DanceWorks maintains vital community links as the administrator of Dance Ontario and The CanDance Network.
The Mainstage Series is a curated, fee-paying presentation opportunity for local and touring artists. Mainstage fees range from $5,000-8,000 per 2-3 night run. Artists must submit a proposal to the Dance Curator with full description and support material including video documentation of recent work, resumé and sales kit. Video tapes are returned to Canadian artists only if a stamped, self-addressed envelope is included.
The CoWorks Series offers marketing and production support to self-presenting touring companies and local artists in a variety of locations. DanceWorks charges a $300 fee to CoWorks participants. Applicants should submit a project description with proposed dates, venue and budget to the Dance Curator by April 30.
Primary Performance Facility for Mainstage events:
The Enwave Theatre, 231 Queen's Quay West, Toronto, is a non-proscenium, multi-purpose, fully equipped facility with flexible set-up possibilities and retractable seating. Stage has a sprung floor. width: 28ft; depth: 45ft; height: 39ft; seating minimum: 250 for dance events
The Fleck Dance Theatre, which opened in 1983, is a proscenium theatre space designed specifically for the presentation of modern dance and has a seating capacity of 446. The Enwave Theatre is a versatile 425-seat venue can be transformed from a full in-the-round space to a traditional black-box theatre.
