Established in 1981, Neighbourhood Dance Works is the sole presenter of contemporary dance in Newfoundland and Labrador. NDW is dedicated to promoting excellence in contemporary dance through workshops, residencies and presentation. We are committed to the development of a vibrant dance community and the advancement of emerging and mature choreographers. We support local dance creation and facilitate the exchange of skills and knowledge between local and national communities. Neighbourhood Dance Works is a division of Resource Centre for the Arts and is directed by a volunteer committee.

NDW’s flagship event is the annual Festival of New Dance. Since 1990, the Festival has presented some of the most influential and internationally recognized artists in Canadian contemporary dance and has helped advance the careers of local artists. The Festival welcomes submissions from local, Canadian and International performers. Deadline for submissions is September 1st for the following years’ festival.

Artists presented recently include Marie-Julie Asseslin, Karen Bernard, Lois Brown, Danse Carpe Diem/Emmanuel Jouthe, Fondation Jean-Pierre Perrault, Jenn Goodwin and Sarah Doucet, HUM/Susanna Hood, Sheila Hunt, MovEnt/Day Helesic, Natalie Morin, Caroline Niklas-Gordon, Barbara Pallomina, Lee Saunders, George Stamos, Sarah Joy Stoker and Anne Troake.

Other presentations include First Look, a new performance series that provides an informal, supportive venue for emerging and established choreographers. Neighbourhood Dance Works is committed to developing partnerships for the creation and presentation of new work.

Venue:
NDW’s primary venue is the historic LSPU (Long Shoremen’s Protective Union) Hall in downtown St. John’s. The theatre is a 160 seat black box with a playing space of 41’ x 26’, and computerized sound and lighting equipment. The LSPU Hall is owned and operated by the Resource Centre for the Arts.
