All sorts of dance for all sorts of people

New Works’ presenting activities are guided by a commitment to dance as a powerful communicative tool, to inclusiveness and diversity, to raising the profile of dance artists from diverse practices, and to participation in dance activities by the general public.

New Works presents two dance series: Dance Allsorts and All Over the Map, as well as special events from time to time. Both series feature dance and movement-based work from a variety of cultural traditions. These events are designed to expand the public’s connection to dance from diverse communities, to celebrate the breadth and diversity of dance, and to present culturally diverse dance artists in a professional manner.

Artists may submit proposals at any time; however, our season is normally booked by the previous spring. Proposals should include a project description and DVD, as well as a list of upcoming performances, as we prefer to book work we have seen performed live. More guidelines for applications can be found at www.newworks.ca/information.

Dance Allsorts is a popular family series, presented once a month from September to May at the Roundhouse Community Centre. The performance takes place on a Sunday afternoon at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Each performance is complemented by a series of community dance classes that are taught by the performing artists.

The Roundhouse Community Centre contains a flexible fully equipped, professionally staffed Performance Centre (200 maximum seated audience). For more information see www.roundhouse.ca.

All Over the Map is similar to Dance Allsorts but louder, livelier and the performances take place outdoors. Beginning in 2006, all performances will be accompanied by live music. Shows take place in front of Performance Works theatre, on Sunday afternoons in July and August.

The Performance Works outdoor stage is a professionally staffed venue with a 12’ by 24’ stage (additional staging can be added to accommodate musicians).
