Commissioning work is a priority activity for the network. It is a presenter-driven process which deepens the working relationship among artists and presenters. In essence, presenters propose artists they trust and believe in, with whom they have a productive working relationship, often of many years’ duration. They actively discuss artist candidates, weighing factors such as a choreographer’s presenting and touring history and experience, track record of innovation, mastery of craft, and the contribution the artist has made to the art form. The presenters must feel confident that the artist they nominate can create a work that will succeed in each of their venues. When a minimum of four members of the CanDance Network agree to commission an artist, they can apply to the CanDance Network for matching funds. Each presenter makes a financial contribution towards the creation costs of a new work, which they plan to present as part of a Canadian tour. Through the Creation Fund, choreographers receive support to create and develop new works culminating in a performce tour of at least four Canadian cities. This develops new audiences, and enhances the artistic experience for current audiences who crave innovation. It offers an unprecedented opportunity to dance creators, by giving commissioned dances a longer life and a national audience. It gives a vote of confidence and financial support to a choreographer, increases the interaction of this artist and/or company with Canadians in cities outside their home market, and provides employment for dancers and choreographers. The CanDance Network has established a reputation for identifying promising artists and helping them break into the tour circuit. By drawing on the expertise of members who work closely with local artists, the network develops a body of knowledge about these artists. The Creation Fund receives financial support from The Canada Council Dance Section. As a result of the project, I was able to connect with and meet new collaborators in both Britain and Canada. The prestige of the CANDANCE fund seemed to follow me wherever I went in Canada such that even people who did not know my work were intrigued to find out more. Participation in the Creation Fund has definitely benefited my career. I have improved my own skills of choreography by observing and collaborating closely with Shobana Jeyasingh, a choreographer whose work and mind I value greatly. Le Fonds de création permet au réseau de respecter son engagement à développer et à distribuer des créations originales canadiennes en danse. Commander de nouvelles pièces chorégraphiques est une des priorités du réseau. Ce projet invite donc les diffuseurs à renforcer les liens qui les unissent entre eux et ceux qui les unissent aux artistes en danse. En effet, les diffuseurs doivent proposer, comme bénéficiaires des retombées de ce fonds, des artistes en qui ils croient et en qui ils ont confiance. Souvent, ces diffuseurs en viennent à établir une relation de travail de longue durée, s’étalant même sur plusieurs années, avec l’artiste ou les artistes qu’ils ont proposés. Entre eux, les diffuseurs évaluent les diverses candidatures, échangent les informations qu’ils possèdent sur les artistes, afin de faire un choix éclairé : la présentation du chorégraphe, par exemple, ses expériences de tournée comme celles des danseurs et la contribution apportée par chacun à cette forme d’art qu’est la danse, sont des critères de sélection importants. Chaque diffuseur doit être confiant que l’artiste dont il appuie la mise en nomination peut créer une oeuvre qui sera bien reçue dans les lieux de diffusion. Lorsque au moins quatre diffuseurs du réseau CanDanse s’entendent pour financer un artiste, ils peuvent faire une demande de subvention au réseau Candanse. Chaque diffuseur contribue financierement a la création d’une nouvelle piece chorégraphique dont ladite piece sera présentée dans le cadre d’une tournée canadienne. Grâce au Fonds de création, les chorégraphes reçoivent le support nécessaire pour créer une nouvelle piece chorégraphique. Ils présenteront leur piece dans au moins quatre villes canadiennes. Cette initiative développe un nouvel auditoire et rehausse l’expérience artistique d’un auditoire qui recherche l’innovation. Cela offre également une chance sans précédent aux créateurs en danse, en donnant à une nouvelle oeuvre une espérance de vie plus longue et la possibilité d’être vue par un auditoire national. Le Fonds de création apporte donc une certaine sécurité financière à l’artiste, est un signe de confiance dans ses talents de création, lui permet d’échanger avec des canadiens dans des villes en-dehors de sa zone d’influence habituelle et, bien sûr, procure de l’emploi aux danseurs et aux chorégraphes. La réputation du réseau CanDanse n’est plus à faire. Le réseau permet à des artistes de se faire connaître et de percer dans le milieu de la danse. En partageant leurs expertises, les membres peuvent ainsi informer le réseau sur les artistes de leur région. Le Fonds de création reçoit l’appui financier du Conseil des Arts du Canada. The CanDance Creative Exchange Project (CEP) is a presenter driven initiative to facilitate meaningful artistic exchange among artists based in different Canadian communities.  Note for Artists: While it is the presenters who apply for a CEP, artists are welcome to prospose ideas for a specific CEP to their local/regional CanDance member orgainzation directly. Please see our membership list for details. Project Description: Three CanDance members (Host Presenters) from different geographical regions (Host Communities) partner and select three artists or groups of artists to receive and/or participate in some form of artistic exchange. The project will facilitate and financially support exchange activities and performacnes within the presenters' Host Communities. Examples: These examples are by no means exhaustive: participants are free to define their own CEP, provided it meets the basic eligibility criteria listed below. Example #1 - Three artists/compaines represented by three Host Presenters collectively travel to the three Host Communities where each artist's work is presented. While this may or may not be on a shared program, the artists sould be engaged in mutual outreach and professional development activities in addition to their performance activities.  Example #2 - An artist or group of artists are selected to provide professional development activities for an artis or group of artists in three Host Communities. The professional development activities may or may not lead to the presentation of work. It is expected that artists from three different communities will have access to professional development activities not usually available to them.  Deadline: Deadline for CanDance members to apply is Friday January 29, 2010 Eligibility: - The proposed prject must meet the criteria outlined above in teh project description - The three Host Presenters will each contribute $5,500 to the project - The CanDance Network will support one CEP annually. CanDance will match the total cash contributions form the Host Presenters, to a maximum of $16,500. Application Process: Three Host Presenters will submit a proposal to The CanDance Network Head Officce with the following information: - Names of the participating CanDance members, and a written/signed commitment from each confirming their participation and financial contribution - Names and brief biographies of the participating artists - Project descriptions stating how the project will benefit the artists and the Host Communities. (up to 1,000 words) - A brief statement signed by each artist or group of artists stating their goals for the project. (up to 500 words) - Project budget to a maximum of $33,000 - Timeline Eligible Costs: When preparing your budget, please refer to the list below of eligible costs: Covered in $33,000 budget - Artist and Management Fees (Choreographer, Performers, Tour Manager,Technical Director, Program Manager, Accompanist) - Studio Expenses - Travel, accommodation and per diem - Publicity materials - Aministrative expenses related to the project (telephone, courier etc) Addtional Costs to be covered by each host presenter - Presentation costs such as venue rental, technical staff, and front of house staff - Operating Costs Selection Process: A designated member of the CanDance Board of Directors will review all applications to ensure that they comply wit the CEP guidelines. The Board will select successful proposals and recommend funding levels. In the event that a board member is also participating in a project, s/he will not be involved in the selection proccess. The CanDance Program Manager will assist with the project coordination as needed for each individual project. The Host Presenters and Head Office will decide upon the allocations of these duties at the outset of the project.

Le Projet d'échange en création Candanse (PEC) est une initiative de diffuseurs pour faciliter des échanges artistiques enrichissants entre des artistes de différentes communautés au Canada. Avis aux artistes: Bien que ce soit les diffuseurs qui font les demandes de PEC, les artistes sont invités   à proposer des PEC particuliers directement à leur organization membre CanDanse régionale/locale. Description du project: Trois members CanDanse (diffuseurs d'accueil) de différents lieux géographiques (communautés d'accueil) se réunissent pour sélectionner trois artistes ou groupes d'artistes pour recevoir ou participer à un échanges artistique donné. Les activités de développement professionnel peuvent donner lieu à un spectacle ou non. Il est attendu que les artistes des trois communautés participent à des activités de développement professionnel qui ne leur sont pas habituellement accessibles. Échances: L'échance pour les membres du réseau CanDanse est vendredi 29 janvier 2010. Critères d'admissibilité: - Le projet  doit répondre aux critères soulignés dans la description de projet ci-dessus. - Les trois diffuseurs d'accueil doivent chacun contribuer 5 500 $ au projet. - Le réseau CanDanse soutient un PEC par année et offre unes somme équivalent à l'ensemble des contributions des diffuseurs d'accueil, jusqu'à un maximum de 16 500 $. The CanDance Network assists its members to make informed choices as they program their seasons. Regular meetings provide opportunities to network and learn about new developments regionally, nationally and internationally. At the CanDance Network annual general meeting each presenter talks about upcoming projects with touring potential. The CanDance Network and <a href="http://home.uleth.ca/~scds.secd/welcome.html" target="_blank">The Society for Canadian Dance Studies</a> have formed a partnership to support writing, scholarship and the preservation of Canadian dance. SCDS members receive discounted tickets at all CanDance Network venues and the SCDS website includes the CanDance Network Performance Calendar. This partnership allows dance writers and historians to know about Network performances, and have affordable access to these events. In return, the SCDS is archiving printed materials from the Network.

À l'assemblée générale annuelle du réseau CanDanse, chaque diffuseur parle des prochains projets qui se prêtent à des tournées. Le réseau CanDanse et <a href="http://home.uleth.ca/~scds.secd/welcome.html" target="_blank">la Société des études canadiennes en danse</a> (SECD) se sont associés en vue d'aider à la rédaction de documents, d’appuyer les demandes de bourses d'études et d’encourager la diffusion de spectacles, le tout dans le domaine de la danse contemporaine au Canada. Les membres de la SECD reçoivent des billets à prix réduit pour tous les spectacles du réseau CanDanse et le site Web de la SECD publie le calendrier des représentations du réseau CanDanse. Ce partenariat permet aux écrivains et aux historiens en danse d'être au courant des représentations du réseau et d'y avoir accès à un prix abordable. En échange, la SECD archive des articles imprimés publiés par le réseau.
