Established in 1986 as a resource centre for the dance profession and the public in British Columbia, The Dance Centre has evolved into a multifaceted organization offering a range of activities unparalleled in Canadian dance: presenting public performances and events, developing programs and creative residencies to support the professional development of its membership of dance artists, promoting BC dance, and operating Scotiabank Dance Centre in downtown Vancouver.
The Dance Centre presents two main performance series. Global Dance Connections features contemporary dance from BC, Canada and around the world (4-10 shows per season): past presentations include Lynda Gaudreau (Montreal), Nigel Charnock (UK), Karine Ponties (Belgium), Hiroaki Umeda (Japan), Andrea Bozic (Croatia) and Fabien Prioville (Germany), and many BC-based artists. Discouver Dance! is an accessible noon hour series showcasing local companies working in a diverse range of cultural dance styles, such as Goh Ballet, Kokoma African Heritage Ensemble, Flamenco Rosario, South Asian Arts and Strathcona Chinese Dance Company (6 shows per season). Dance in Vancouver is a biennial event showcasing BC's contemporary dance artists and companies, with performances, studio presentations and roundtable discussions both for the public and dance presenters who attend from around the world. Other public events are programmed for National Dance Week and International Dance Day in April, and the annual Scotiabank Dance Centre Open House in September. A call for submissions is issued each fall for proposals for the follwoing season (September - June).
